how to skill up defense

Having a hard time skilling up defense. Ice lab does not increase my defense even when my toon is defending a companion. He has
blunt D 33.4/piercing D 34.6/slashing D 31.2.

Hello,
Have you access to a guild ? They can build arena, with opponents specialized (only one attack/defense), level 50, 60 and 70. For opponents level 30 and 40, you can build private arena, if you finished the classical arenas (avidel brech formore). It's very useful to up companion's skills.
