Does the armor have any purpose?
The 6 armor pieces (helmet, body, legs, arms, gauntlets/gloves, boots) protect each of your body parts. When the opponent hits your "head", only the defense on your helmet will be used to calculate the damage your head will receive. The defense levels of the other 5 pieces won't be used to calculate the damage you receive. The overall defense level only affects the chance you get hit and which type of offense (blunt/pierce/slash) the opponent will use.
In addition, in my experience, when
attacker's offense - defender's defense >= 10, the chance of making a critical hit (double damage) is quite high.
In you first picture, it seems that you were not wearing a helmet with good defense. The opponent has 31 piercing offense. That would explain how you received 61 damage in head.
In the 2nd case, the opponent hits your feet. Chances are your boots has weak defense.
